Synopsis

After the Civil War, a black couple living in the North struggles to keep their love alive. The husband, a former Union Army captain turned Buffalo soldier, is stationed far away from his wife, who works as President Lincoln’s private secretary.

Despite the distance, their love survives and is strengthened by the many love letters they exchange. The wife sends her husband ribbons from her hair and flowers from her bonnets, while he sends her letters filled with his deepest thoughts and feelings.

However, their love is tested when the Secretary falls in love with the Captain’s wife. She struggles with the love of her husband and the affections shown to her by the Secretary. Who will she choose in the end? Can she hold on until the Buffalo wars are over?
